Hiking in New Zealand Part 2: Wanaka

This is part two of a two-part series of hiking in New Zealand.

Last week, we focused on hiking in Queenstown, New Zealand. This week, I will share my hiking experience in Wanaka, just a short drive from Queentowns.

Located on New Zealand’s South Island, Wanaka is a beautiful small town located in the Southern Alps of New Zealand with a population of 8,900 and a hiker’s paradise with diverse hiking trails, stunning scenery, shimmering lakes, and beautiful mountains. Here are a few reasons why you should consider hiking in Wanaka:

Whether you’re looking for a challenging hike or a more moderate walk, Wanaka has something for everyone. From gentle walks along the lakeshore to challenging mountain hikes, there are a variety of trails to suit different skill levels and interests.

During your hikes, you might spot native birds such as kea, tui, and bellbirds, as well as rare plant species such as the Wanaka cushion plant. Plus, you’ll have plenty of amazing photos and memories to share with your friends and family.

In this week’s post, I will share four of the hiking trails in Wanaka.

Roy’s Peak Track: The Roy’s Peak Track is a spectacular but challenging hike that offers stunning views of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountains. The trail is approximately 16 km long and takes about 5-6 hours to complete, with a steep ascent that requires a good level of fitness to complete. However, once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views that are truly awe-inspiring. On a clear day, you can see for miles, taking in the beauty of the snow-capped mountains, glacial lakes, and rolling hillsides. As you make your way up the trail, you’ll also pass through diverse terrain, including tussock grasslands and alpine meadows. This hike is undoubtedly an unforgettable experience that showcases some of the best views Wanaka has to offer. Be sure to bring your camera along to capture the jaw-dropping scenery that awaits you at the summit.

Isthmus Peak Track: The Isthmus Peak Track is another challenging yet incredibly rewarding hike that should be on every outdoor enthusiast’’s list when visiting Wanaka, New Zealand. The trail takes you on a journey through beautiful alpine terrain, with stunning views of both Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea along the way. The 16 km hike is rated as challenging, with a steep ascent that requires a good level of fitness and endurance to complete. However, the breathtaking panoramic views at the summit make every step worth it. It takes about 5-7 hours to complete. On a clear day, you can see for miles, taking in the beauty of the two lakes and the surrounding mountains. As with any hike in New Zealand, hikers should be well-prepared for changing weather conditions, including rain and strong winds. It’s essential to bring appropriate clothing and gear, including sturdy hiking boots, a waterproof jacket, and plenty of water and snacks. The Isthmus Peak Track is an unforgettable hiking experience that showcases the natural beauty of the Wanaka region and should not be missed by outdoor enthusiasts looking for a challenge.

Rob Roy Glacier Track: The Rob Roy Glacier Track is a popular hiking trail among nature lovers, offering more than just stunning views. The moderate hiking trail takes hikers through alpine meadows, beech forests, and waterfalls and is approximately 10 km long, taking about 3-4 hours to complete. It starts with a picturesque swing bridge over the glacial waters of the Matukituki River, and then leads hikers through a lush beech forest filled with birdsong. As the trail ascends into the alpine meadows, hikers are treated to spectacular views of waterfalls cascading down from the towering peaks above. The trail culminates with an awe-inspiring view of the Rob Roy Glacier, which makes for a perfect photo opportunity. Hikers should be aware that the trail can be steep and slippery in places, so good footwear is recommended.

Diamond Lake and Rocky Mountain Track: The Diamond Lake and Rocky Mountain Track is another popular moderate hike that offers stunning views of not only Lake Wanaka but also the surrounding peaks, such as Mount Aspiring and Mount Tyndall. The trail is approximately 8 km long and takes about 3-4 hours to complete. Hikers will start the trail at Diamond Lake, where they can take a short detour to enjoy the serene beauty of the lake. From there, the trail takes hikers through beech forests, past waterfalls, and up to the summit of Rocky Mountain. At the top of Rocky Mountain, hikers can take in the panoramic views of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountains, including the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps. The hike can be challenging at times, with some steep sections and rocky terrain, but the breathtaking views make it all worth it.

Traveling to Wanaka

Wanaka is located about an hour’s drive from Queenstown. The nearest airport is Wanaka Airport, which is a small airport that operates limited flights from other parts of New Zealand. The nearest international airport is Queenstown International Airport, which is located about an hour’s drive from Wanaka. You can also take a bus or drive to Wanaka from other parts of New Zealand. There are several bus services that operate between Queenstown and Wanaka, and the journey takes about an hour.

One other must-do in Wanka is visiting the infamous Wanaka tree, also known as the lone tree of Wanaka. This weep tree is an iconic willow tree located on the southern shore of Lake Wanaka in New Zealand’s South Island. This lone tree has become one of the most photographed trees in the world due to its stunning location and the fact that it stands alone in the middle of the lake. The tree is estimated to be around 80 years old and is said to have originally grown from a fence post on the lakeshore. Despite being located in the water, the tree is easily accessible to visitors via a short walk from the town center. The Wanaka tree has become a symbol of Wanaka and is a must-visit destination for anyone visiting the area.

Hiking in New Zealand is a rewarding experience, and reaching the summit of a mountain or completing a challenging trail can give you a real sense of accomplishment.
